Today, I look back on my journey at Rabobank Headquarters in Utrecht, the Netherlands, with a heart full of gratitude. I had a beautiful farewell, one that touched me deeply and almost felt like a promise that this might not be goodbye forever, but rather, “until our paths cross again.”

As I close this chapter, I am reminded that every experience, every encounter and every person we meet has something to teach us. Sometimes, we enter a workplace to do a job, but we leave having gained so much more: knowledge, wisdom, beautiful memories and a deeper understanding of people.
My journey at Rabobank, where I worked as a Guest Relations Officer at the reception, has been one of those meaningful experiences.
Working at reception taught me that we are more than just the first point of contact. We are often the first faces people see, the first voices they hear and the first impression they carry with them when they enter an organisation. In Dutch, we call this de eerste ontvangst — the first welcome.
I have always believed that a welcome is more than a greeting. It is about making people feel seen, respected, comfortable and valued. It is about understanding that everyone who walks through the door arrives with a different story, a different background and sometimes a different need.
In my role at Rabobank Headquarters in Utrecht, I had the privilege of meeting so many people and experiencing so much diversity. I encountered different cultures, personalities, perspectives and ways of communicating. Each day presented an opportunity to learn something new, to practise patience, to listen more carefully and to understand people beyond what I could see on the surface.
One of the greatest lessons I take away from Rabobank is that diversity is not simply about working alongside people who are different from us; it is about being willing to learn from those differences. We grow when we listen, when we remain open-minded and when we recognise that no single person knows everything.
But if there is one thing that has guided me throughout my journey, it is the foundation my mother laid for me.
My mother always taught me simple lessons that I did not fully appreciate when I was younger.
She would say, “Whenever you visit a place and use a cup, wash it and put it back the way you found it.”
At first, I thought she was simply nagging. Today, I understand that she was teaching me responsibility, consideration and respect for other people’s spaces.
She would also say, “Whenever you use a toilet, after flushing, turn around and make sure you leave it as clean as you found it.”
Again, what seemed like a small instruction was, in fact, a lesson in character. My mother was teaching me to take responsibility for my actions, to consider the next person and to do what is right even when nobody is watching.
As a grown woman, I have come to understand that these lessons extend far beyond cups and toilets. They apply to our workplaces, our relationships, our friendships and every space we occupy.
Touch what you touch with all your heart. Never abuse the goodness of others. Respect people, appreciate kindness and always strive to leave things better than you found them.
These are principles I carried with me to Rabobank Headquarters in Utrecht, and they are principles I will continue to carry wherever life takes me.
I am deeply grateful to my Rabobank colleagues for being part of this chapter. Thank you for the collaboration, the conversations, the laughter, the support and the lessons. Thank you for trusting me to be part of the reception experience and for giving me the opportunity to contribute, in my own way, to the welcoming environment of the organisation.
Thank you for every interaction that taught me something, every moment that challenged me to grow and every experience that broadened my understanding of people. Some lessons were shared intentionally; others came through simply observing, listening and working together. I value them all.
I leave with an even stronger belief that we should never stop learning and that we should always be willing to teach. I believe in mutual relationships, where respect, kindness, knowledge and understanding flow both ways. We all have something to offer, and we all have something to learn.
My addiction should always be happiness, kindness, learning and personal growth. I want to keep meeting people with an open heart, embracing diversity and making a positive difference wherever I go.
As I move on, I do so with gratitude rather than regret. I may be leaving my position at Rabobank Headquarters in Utrecht, but I am taking the experiences, the lessons and the memories with me. And who knows? Perhaps this is not the end of our story, but simply a new chapter in which our paths may cross again.
There is a beautiful Dutch saying: “Wie goed doet, goed ontmoet.”
Those who do good will encounter goodness in return.
I believe that wholeheartedly. Let us continue to be kind, even when it is not required; respectful, even when nobody is watching; and generous with our knowledge, even when there is nothing to gain. We never know how much a smile, a warm welcome or a thoughtful gesture can mean to another person.
To my Rabobank colleagues at the Utrecht headquarters, thank you for the beautiful farewell and for being part of my journey. Thank you for reminding me that a workplace is not only somewhere we come to work, but also somewhere we learn, connect, grow and leave a little piece of ourselves.
And to my mother, thank you for teaching me that the little things are never really little. They are the foundation of the person we become.
May we always leave every cup clean, every space respected, every person valued and every relationship touched with kindness.
Until our paths cross again, Rabobank Headquarters, Utrecht, thank you for the journey. ❤️
With gratitude and warm regards.
