In February 2015, I will have breastfed my children for seven uninterrupted years. My first daughter kept nursing until she was three and a half, right around when I was heavily pregnant with my second. Since all my deliveries happened by emergency c-section, I had to work a little harder in those first two days to get my milk flowing for each newborn.
My oldest, still only three and a half and not yet weaned herself, helped stimulate my milk supply when my second baby arrived, and stayed close during those first days of engorgement. That was such a comfort. Through tandem feeding, our daughter felt included in welcoming her little brother into the family — and to this day, they still share the bond they built then.
The third pregnancy was difficult, but we pushed through anyway. Now our third child is three months old, and we hope to keep breastfeeding her for as long as we can. Nature’s own remedy.
